New Club On Campus

Students with an interest in neuroscience formed a new Cleveland State University club, the Collegiate Neuroscience Association (CNA) during the 2018 academic year.

When CNA solidified its group, members sought Andrew Slifkin, Ph.D., a professor in the psychology department, to become their faculty adviser.

“Students came to me,” said Slifkin. “They had already formed the club and there was enough general interest that this came to be.”

This club is different because it has a specific topic element. While there are psychology clubs and clubs that have a broader scope, neuroscience is a specific interest that deals with how the nervous system functions and narrows the focus down to that component instead of a generalized subject.

“You can meet and interact with people who share the same interest,” Slifkin explained. “This aims to amplify and deepen interest in the subject.”

The CAN also will help make meaningful connections with classwork and references to psychological learning. The commitment is still being discussed and finalized, but Slifkin said he believes CNA would be meeting twice a month.

The group has 8-20 non-officer members. While some founding members have graduated, returning members can develop their own focus for the organization. Slifkin said anyone interested can contact him for information on the group.

“I’m really happy in the interest,” Slifkin said. “They seem like an enthusiastic bunch. People can offer input that will have an impact in this club. I’m happy to work and share ideas. This is all about the students and what they want to make of their time.”
